What Does Jesus Turning Water Into Wine Mean?

Jesus' first miracle didn't happen in a temple or in front of a crowd. It happened at a wedding party that ran out of wine.

It's one of the best-known stories in the Bible (John 2:1–11). But if you've ever wondered why it matters, or what it has to do with your life right now, it's worth a second look.

The setting: a wedding about to go wrong

In Jesus' day, a wedding wasn't a one-night event. It was a seven-day celebration, and the groom's family paid for all of it. Running out of wine halfway through would have been a disaster.

As Pastor Nathan put it on Sunday, "You had one job, right? And you dropped the ball." The family would have carried that embarrassment for years.

Mary noticed, and she went to Jesus first

Nobody else seemed to see the problem. Mary did. And instead of panicking, gossiping or trying to fix it herself, she went straight to Jesus: "They have no more wine."

That's the first thing this story shows us. Following Jesus means walking through life with your eyes open to what other people need, and bringing it to him before anyone else.

Faith plus obedience

Jesus' answer sounds strange at first: "My time has not yet come." Mary doesn't argue. She turns to the servants and says, "Do whatever he tells you."

Pastor Nathan summed it up in one line: "Faith plus obedience equals miracles." Mary believed Jesus could change the situation. Then she was ready to do whatever he said, even before she knew what that would be.

The servants had to work while they waited

Jesus told the servants to fill six stone jars with water. Each one held 20 to 30 gallons. That meant hauling water up from a well, one bucket at a time, for something that made no sense. They needed wine, not water.

They did it anyway. As Pastor Nathan said, "We're gonna wait, but we're gonna work at the same time."

That might be the hardest part of this story. Sometimes we pray and then just sit there. But Pastor Nathan asked a question worth sitting with: "What if you aren't waiting on God? What if God's waiting on you?"

Let God decide the how

Jesus could have snapped his fingers. He chose to involve people instead. Most of us want God to answer our prayers our way. "You know what my way is?" Pastor Nathan asked. "Fast and easy."

God rarely works that way. Following Jesus isn't easy. But it is worth it.

Blessing or miracle?

When the master of ceremonies tasted the new wine, he couldn't believe it. The best had been saved for last.

Almost no one at the wedding knew what had happened. Everyone enjoyed the wine. But only a few people, Mary, the disciples and the servants, were part of the miracle.

That leaves you with a question: are you just happy to be at the party? Or do you want to be part of what God is doing?
